The Art of Letting Go

People often ask me “what do you do to create change in your life?” It’s a great question and I’ve never known how to answer it, I never felt I had a process or a formula for creating change and always thought I simply acted in the moment, making decisions and choices based on what I felt was right, then and there.

With greater thought and time, it seems I couldn’t have been further from the truth! When I decided to pay attention to my thought process and actions whilst going through change, I came to realise I do act, think and feel quite intentionally through change.

Change isn’t always easy, big change never is! It’s messy, it’s emotional, it’s confusing, it’s chaotic, but in amongst the chaos there is an order of processing the change and a gradual letting go of long held beliefs and thought patterns.

One thing I do quite intentionally is to ask myself these questions: –

“Why am I fighting this change? What am I actually fighting for?”

“What am I trying to achieve?”

“What if there is another way?”

“What am I holding onto that’s stopping me from moving forward?”

“What am I afraid of?”

“If I let go, what will happen?”

I ask myself these questions until I better understand some of the answers. It can take days, weeks, or even months, there is certainly no time frame for moving through change.

As I find answers to my questions I begin to understand myself better, I begin to stop fighting the change and accept it to see new possibilities and opportunities that previously were unseen, unfelt and unknown.

Letting go isn’t easy, in fact it’s very hard, but all through my life the answer has always been to let go. I then open my mind and heart to new possibilities, step outside my thoughts, my ego, my long-held beliefs and let go of what I think is right from my own limited life experiences.

I’ve learned that the more I let go the more I learn about myself, about others and about the world, and it’s absolutely beautiful.
